Jay FreeBSD sound stack is really something else. Not only it does a lot at kernel level (mixing, resampling, equalizing, bit-perfect mode), things that NetBSD or Linux haven't partially catch up with as of today, but also provides solid ALSA emulation. A working sndio port is also available, and well integrated in the package tree.
