szilard Thank you, it's actually my X environment and not the console.
It's a 80 character wide terminal centered on the screen with the same background color as the root window.
You can easily change the background and font colors of the console on NetBSD by changing a couple of variables and recompiling the kernel. JuvenalUrbino has written a nice guide on how how to customize the NetBSD console here: https://retrobsd.ddns.net/vcscda.htm
