There used to be a project that was working on UbuntuBSD. Are there any similar projects to UbuntuBSD as that project is dead (anything other than pacBSD as that is difficult to set up)?

joe213 this is not my business, but if you're looking for a daily driver, why wasting time on niche projects that some devs have/had for fun, just to show that its possible?!
Yes, there are... Debian/BSD and Gentoo/BSD. There could be more that I'm not aware, never really looked into it.
The point is, it would be as complicated as pacBSD, and once you, eventually manage to set it up, the support on such projects will be close to zero.
Yeah I know, the feeling of achieving a set-up that not so many people have, is pleasing. But, you want to use the machine for some work and entertainment as well.
If you set-up a laptop running say, AlpineLinux with 2bwm or frankenwm, I dare to promisse, there won't be many of you ?
Actually, this is something I've considered myself. You see, AlpineLinux has some good devs and its used as base in Docker, postmarketOS and a lot of embeded devices. This means support will, most probably, remain stable. On the other hand, it uses musl and busybox, which means you will still have to hunt for solutions and tinker on a daily basis, so there won't be many using it as desktop/laptop. Believe me, it will be hard enough to keep your motivation.
The reason I'm not using it?! There're already 7 machines in the house, my wife wouldn't be happy with one more ?
Your call, but if I were you I'd stick to something that has a user base.

I installed Trident and it there are no performance issues on my PC no lag nothing unlike Linux but with Trident it has problems with my wifi adapter, it works but if you physically reconnect the adapter, then it does not work plus audio does not work with Trident. I wish there was a combination of the two worlds combined into one OS.

The problem about GhostBSD is that it uses UFS instead of ZFS if you wanted to install it on a seperate partition on the same disk, so really I want a good easy to use distro which just works with little to no problems.

Otherwise, with nVidia you're stuck with something based on FreeBSD.

That is pretty good.

The problem with Linux was even with the correct nVidia drivers, it still ran like crap. On Windows without nVidia drivers, it still ran smoothly which is pretty weird. I do hope NetBSD runs properly without nVidia drivers so that I can install this OS instead.

joe213 Maybe @JuvenalUrbino can answer the question about ZFS vs. UFS. I've never bother with this, I use UFS on NetBSD and ext4 on linux. Keep a backup of my data on a 16GB usb and of config files on a github repo. If the worst happens, it takes me 30min to wipe the drive, install NetBSD and git clone my own repo.

On NetBSD 8.0 you will have to use the open source Nouveau driver. Just try, I can't tell you anything about it ?

ZFS has huge pros (unparalleled stability, self-healing, CoW, snapshots + boot environments, compression, deduplication, checksums), but it's also way more resource-intensive, complex, harder to master, trickier to fix in the extremely unlikely occurrence it broke for real

joe213 No, I haven't, my NetBSD system is purely BSD. That said, it should be a no issue, compatibility exists on NetBSD also, chapter 10 of the NetBSD guide.

Here's my answer to that...
"When I started using Linux I wanted a rolling-release, bleeding-edge distro without systemd, that’s how I found Void.
Had a look at Alpine also, read about musl libC and decided to use that on Void. Also, I wanted to build my system from scratch and use a tiling window manager, …awesome wm.

I got interested in BSD as, I’m not happy with the increasing influence that Microsoft has on the Linux foundation. I want to have a system ready to move to in case I’m no longer happy running Linux.

Why NetBSD?
I didn’t want a DE, I don’t see myself running anything else other than awesome wm on my machines, so this excluded GhostBSD and TrueOS/Trident.
I wanted to run one of the original BSD’s with awesome wm.
Somehow, I’ve always felt attracted to smaller and less popular operating systems, so FreeBSD was out.

It all boiled down to OpenBSD, NetBSD or DragonFly. Void was created by a NetBSD dev, so I was curious about it and picked that. I must say I’m happy with it, simple, tidy and intuitive.

pin I tried Devaun Linux and this is the only distro that works nearly properly on my PC compared to any other distro. It is pretty good and I am thinking of installing it.

Manjaro: 4.20.x
Kubuntu: 4.15.x
...
It may be a kernel regression ?

I have tried Manjaro (KDE, MATE and Budgie Edition), ArchLabs (not to be confused with Arch Linux), Xubuntu, Kubuntu and Linux Mint.

It nearly works fine, there is a screen tearing issue (same problem with other distros that uses XFCE maybe Devaun uses XFCE), and that WhatsApp Web did lag on chromium (It lags a lot more on other distros without nVidia drivers). But for the most part, scrolling in browsers was pretty smooth and the animations and everything was good unlike other distros where it really lags, and this is without nVidia drivers so pretty amazing.

So it did show 4.9.0.6

Manjaro for me was set to 4.14. It has this weird issue where if you scroll, it will glitch up on Firefox and the entire OS after launching Firefox. and Even after changing the kernel to 4.9.X, the issue still persists, this only happens on Manjaro, not on any other distro which is weird.

I noticed that when I booted into GhostBSD, Firefox had a similar lag to all the other distros. I am not too sure about Trident as the Internet did not work for me at first and I installed the nVidia drivers before running the browser.

I hope NetBSD does not have the same issue.

So I reinstalled Kubuntu on my PC and I did downgrade from Linux kernel version 4.18 to 4.9 and while it did improve performance, I was getting a choppy feel while scrolling on Firefox.

Do you use Jails on your current netBSD set up?

joe213 Have you tried the 4.4.x LTS kernel series? After all, your hardware is rather old...
