nortonham I just installed netbsd on an old desktop with an amd A6 and 8 gb of ram. Obviously it's an old cpu, but the performance on a recent debian install was much better. I've taken a cursory look at the docs to fine tune performance by editing kernel configs etc.... Anyone here have good advice on how to get the most of netbsd?
pin nortonham Anything specific you'd like to improve? I didn't need to do anything on my machine to have good overall performance.
nortonham it was slow with xfce4 and firefox...now with awesome wm it's slightly faster. That was most likely part of the problem. I don't have anything specific I'd like to improve, I just noticed the performance on linux was better than on netbsd. So far I've only seem search results like "netbsd tuning."
pin nortonham don't know about xfce haven't used it on NetBSD. I used to run awesomewm on this machine and it works well. If you want a full DE, give me a day or two, I'm done testing LXQt-0.16.0 and will push it to pkgsrc, most probably on Monday. It works really well.
nia Yes there's a GPU, the GPU is on the APU chip, from the perspective of the OS it's no different from a dedicated card. It's probably too new to be supported by NetBSD's port of the Linux radeon driver, so you're not getting graphical acceleration.
