mutterhunt what's CUSE, a driver module or a pkg, btw?

In case you have not figured it out yourself yet: it's a kernel module.
$ man cuse for more information

mutterhunt Now it runs -STABLE — it used to run -CURRENT.

Cencorship, as pericunaere curses in the win$ section, so there's some big brother filtering the ""ncurses.tgz" g marking as [deleted].

sorry for late reply, but let's change to another topic afterwards.

I precompiled a NO-DEBUG kernel from /usr/src as uname -a:
FreeBSD freeBSD-CURRENT 13.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 13.0-CURRENT #5 r368997: Tue Jan 12 13:46:33 CET 2021 lizbeth@freeBSD-CURRENT:/usr/obj/usr/src/amd64.amd64/sys/LIZBETH amd64

whenever I do a

svn up /usr/src

I get

svn: warning: cannot set LC_CTYPE locale
svn: warning: environment variable LANG is de_AT
svn: warning: please check that your locale name is correct
Updating '/usr/src':

So, if someone is interested in daily projecting here, please take you the time and read further:
no output of changes but I wanna know where is being worked at the moment and on which architecture.

Colleges of netBSD having troubles to compile the rasperry pi 4 (armhf) for instance, same as the IoT-thing (needs two sd-cards and openBSD *.fs boot the kernel here but don't find root partition afterwards physically, in virtualization (on writeable .ISO and not an .IMG for the USB) but I get 'broken library c++' on both i386 and amd64 images when tryingto install a DM or even a XFCE-desktop (there it is: pkg_add -uvi for updating the system)at the runtime of the whole graphical environment, pitty, pitty...

NetBSD is good in a movement what XEN-development concerns and freeBSD shoulda be glad to have someone to introduce the virtualization kernel into the main construct of booting (as primary before the usual -CURRENTS flews out). Problems to be corrected in xen-freebsd@freebsd.org discussion concerning an UIMMU issue or so quite similar, forgotten at the moment, hopefully not the age of the PC... but XEN and BIOS does good together, UEFI is much more trickier, Haiku OS boots nearly every MBR but needs an extra image for UEFI boots. They had something where my old BTX-eyes looked like a car g: a 1920x1280 screen but with blue sparkeling line on the upper side (costs probably the same amount of electricity like BTC-mining, which is normally simply a fraud, tried to bet as I felt tired and looked for adrenaline, lost 7 bucks, but it is the future!). Every kernel does a lot of crypto like camelia, heimdal, sha512, gzip compression and anti-theft-virus-security options and it's I guess about 10% of booting progress. ACPIs are not standarized, this is what mobile customs lack and leads to the many differnent "just for thie one android" builds and make a spreading of a CUSTOM difficult. Who's really done this, is lineage OS and pixel OS, all others are depending on the device and the making date of the device sometimes.

So we get Amadrillis-GPUs on Flint OS, Fuchsia OS, Fyde OS and the upcoming generation of mobile systems. If google will hold on hands of this any longer, with the kern for android they heard on us to make it open-source, this is why I never got problems with android but with the monopol-diseaster at the OS-market. And iOS is to much unpersonal, expensive and not even rootable. So the pinephone with KDE Neon and Plasma is the only alternative at the moment.

In the meantime I re-compiled the 'HYPERVISOR hv' into the kern again (thrown out because of being Hyper, to be treated with Ritalin), but still slow in scraping between VM and host and saving a snapshot and so on with family-own VMs but also as /opts like osX (old and rare).

plasma5 and xfce4 updates were well done; I have now the comic-sign of a certain comic on the desktop; the ability of live-3D-backgrounds grows and plasma itself. Playing with thoughts of a Pinephone but not being flash and setup myself = half the joy and 200$, hmmm, poor, poor girl. I had the Ubuntu phone and it was really amazing but after two months the akku was dead suddenly.

The best thing I remembered was when Gates told us that there will never be a Windows 11, only new build-numbers, I thoughta, maybe the whole star is sinking, who knows? 30 years for a computer system is a whole epoché in computer-ages and bill is became older now and a bit more moderate, maybe I have no consequences for the upcoming anymore. I well remember the phase when I couldn't see a windows desktop on official companies, government, etc., and thought an slavery and school and things like this.

I have now freeBSD 13 on daily use and as main system for my notebook, being once again adopted with a new accumulator after 6 years of 24/7; got it at the age of 5, thrown out of the M$ imperia as too old (what windows eats on memory is really a resource-killer; OS-ware is small and intelligent in kernel as well as on all other runlevels, but doens't get always the X immediately, I use the DRM-driver but modesetting as the DRM flickers, getting some graphic errors sometimes. ), and then "her" life started to grow, doing a BIOS update now for weeks, but need a windows boot USB, that for us is a doesn't-work-without thing.

To avoid getting win (version: whatever) on the physical SSD (but no UEFI still?), I tried a lotta things and apps. The Windows USB creator or Rufus or an .APX for the brandmarked "windows to go" (no evaluation versions possible).

One USB-Stick was to slow and badly conecpted, leading to waiting times for 15 hours I gave up; the other stick now contains the "Hiren's Boot CD", also known as a variant of the Windows PE; suddenly not anymore being able to be downloaded (download of file simply doesn't start, tried on 8 servers) since August 2020; typically MS, I thoughta;

so pirate-bay helped out a bit, not being illegal but has it's grey circles sourroundings. My experience shown me that using a simple thing like a squash-fs is beeing made over a .VMDK virtual image, but our Virtualbox has no extension pack (and it isn't planed I guess because of xen-develpment (frequent) but I think the standard bhyve-hypervisor is on the way to loose finally in comparision to KVM.

....... so USB can't be used, as protocol 1.1 isn't supported since Vista anymore in Virtual Box. So I used linux on a USB stick for writing down with extension pack, but windows sign arrived, but no turning round of "hour glass" after kernel boot or a blank screen from beginning onwards.

I manually copied the important files and the "install.wim" (these were times were they had .CAB files for the sets), so it was a simply small pick-nick with an old enemy. You have to unpack the .zip to .iso and then make a virtual machine on an USB stick (you need two, one for linux distro and host like MX linux or antiX that is small and bring it to ''dd', then add - under debian or ubuntu - the program WOEUSB (woeusbgui), look if the other stick, where the PE should arrive isn't mounted (automounter!), write the image down with the proggie, that fascinates me, btw., then there's some active-making (attr. 'a' on fdisk) with guess now --- grub --- and the whole thing boots, well done, seeding torrent on ktorrent at the moment.
so if someone can help to let my machine show again updated files on the console, please don't hesitate to answer. Another problem: how do we call the thread here now? Admin should do but not deleting my loooooong post here, plz.

Thx a lotta for a good and running and old and wise system, dear kernel-inventor,

Lizbeth

@bsduck do a CUSE4BSD_load="YES" (not just CUES_LOAD="YES"_)into /boot/loader.conf and the webcamd is working with sudo webcamd -d ugen0.4 (or whatever it is, ask lspci) -v 0 -i 0"when /etc/rc.conf reminds you to use onestart and give the parameter webcamd_0_flags="var. name" from pciconf -l.

and -CURRENT stays -CURRENT, but linux and virtualbox with newest kern, nono, just take the LTS, it's saver and you avoid a lotta build mistakes.

I don't want to make further circumstances, but it's a third computer spring here with BSD and UNIX is UNIX, I'm afraid. would die for having a look at the mainframes of the town or a big company, but they are all commercial and so I'd to die with my do-it-yourself and trial-and-error policy.

ahhhh..... something else; when ddb is off, the kf5-crash comes to and endless-loop, p.E. and nothing is with crash-report, this is on the baloo-file-extractor on every boot, and ktorrent writes, that it can't find geomind host for the flags of the countries of origin of the chunks of the files downloaded with magnet (4MiB/s is the record at the moment here with the "new" 5G), I already reported.

rvp I would flash BIOS only using Windows.

In the past, whenever I needed to flash BIOS (happened no more than a couple of times, tbh) I used FreeDOS

JuvenalUrbino this is a simple and good idea, as it is nothing than a binary for (ms)-dos; i'da liked the IBM-dos in 1984 better as a little girl, so you see how this stealing from IBM by sides of Microsoft flues through my whole life.

But I was curious on the "LIVE-Windows", so I did the way described, such a botch-up to be honest. many system settings don't work (like screen resolution, taking the standard VGA driver), network needs an extra plugin for WiFi, a.s.o....

but let's discuss something nothing to do with the top-dog (looked it up in the dictionary) at the OSes.

@rvp : is there a compatibility for at least linux for the raptor and can I use it as a vehicel for the ocolus rift? VM and oculus rift? should get a 'good' grafic card and this is new here, I always bought the cheapest stuff as not doing 3D normally. I'm just interested to bring it up, playing and whatever can do someone else afterwards. If I have my success at that point it's far enough as a motivation to go on, but, ohoh, if it doesn't work, then courses like hell and the hoping and frustration. every job has it's sunny and shadow sides, I found out when you are not too fast and therefore sloppy you came further then with the "hopp-hopp"-strategy.

        mutterhunt whenever I do a

Set your locale correctly. See this post. Just change el_GR.UTF-8 to de_AT.UTF-8. You can add more locale variables as needed. Those 3 are the minimal set.

mutterhunt is there a compatibility for at least linux for the raptor

If you're asking if Linux runs on the Raptor POWER9 systems, then yes, Linux is fully (and officially) supported. No idea about Oculus VR + POWER9, though.

Some BIOSes, like OP's (and mine) can only be flashed using a Windows program.

so, sunday it is and straight from the shoulder:

          rvp
did like described in the post mentioned but no difference at all, the same warnings... I also have lightdm (as sddm doesn't work, just flashing the welcome screen and blank screen and then you have to login blindly) and I have the locales at German in /root/.xinitrc using the XFCE-Terminal because of the nice backgrounds available, but so far: one hint --- have my password with an international key somewhere in it but need the International Language allocations for entering my plasma, xfce, gnome. on normal consoles or text-processing it is the KDE-setting for German keyboard layout; so maybe it's a setting in the Xorg.conf?

thx for the answer concerning linux-compatibility question for the RAPTOR9, let's see if it works in May (looking very forward to it!) - (all the pacaur-packages to be built in arch or maybe it's better in this certain kind of matter to use a debian derivative). And maybe: a VM on XEN (halfa way out by now) or VBox with again windows on it to be added with a mousclick as at Steam (working under freeBSD but only first steps on the Raspi4) there are lots VM-Games with the windows-sign, never became compatible with linux. But this is a future music, gotta bring my old notebook on available standards now.

          JuvenalUrbino
those of us, who still have a MBR (but with the advantage of easier implementation of the xen-kernel and xen-tools) normally don't use flash tools that easily being able to flash and all what this windoze program is writing now is "Charge your akku to at least 30%", so buy an 6-7 year old machine a new accu, got two times the wrong one, cursing like hell, but amazon took back, now I think the right is on the way.

Then this bootstick is empty again and can be used for transfer or even a Raspi 4 project (at the moment I'm very convinced with the LibreELEC and KODI, having YouTube with APIs with no commercials in it, like a bad mod on android custom).

But the HTML-Server for entering the API-key isn't available on http://10.0.0.11:50152/api as being blocked by BSD, in linux it works; so write an 64bit api-key via keyboard without any mistake into it, whereas an "I" looks like a "1" and so on. But works now for weeks and is good for sleeping music (9 hours through the night with delta waves and binaural beats, helping to beat my insomnia).

Something else: Has someone using Plasma5 the same problem with the baloo_file_extractor at startup (crashing and as no debug-kernel no callback can be written or even cut out via CTRL+C, dr.konqi thinking in an endless loop), I reported but a screen-shot is not a bug-report.

And: using ktorrent on startup causes the error message in ktorrent: "Can't find host geomind or so" that is responsible for the origin of chunks of a file with the country flags of origin, doesn't work, even if you have an account at geomind; there's no place on ktorrent for an API-key.

Enough, I always write endless for the goods, I think,

          Lizbeth

and: if we are at the point of fine-tuning what does this mean at boot:

from dmesg: Failed to add WC MTRR for [0xe0000000-0xefffffff]: -22; performance may suffer (nothing to do with the wpa_supplicant: country=XX?). A quite normal *NIX-system is easily to be hacked from point of a WLAN if got passwd for login and have a look at /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf, whereas the passwd in clear-text, normally not being encoded with something. A good distribution encodes this on setup but with our short-circuit-methods on installation it is a security lack.

I'm curious about the mailing list update today, if someone has an idea about my xen-kernel-problem (either xen boots or -CURRENT boots)...

Updates today were great! newer gcc10, llvm10 update (after llvm11-devel yesterday), thunar: as having problems with a library sometimes outside XFCE, drm0-update.... wow! we got a good start in 2021!

That's from the DRMKMS driver. You can ignore it. If you look through the dmesg logs collected here, you'll see systems with integrated Intel Graphics produce that warning. Mine does too. I don't think you'll see that error with a discrete graphics card with its own memory.

This is always a critical point when setting up a system, if X works - writing manually in /etc/X11/xorg.conf is confusing and annoying.

yes, thx the exact tipp! was a mute reminder for me to make it secure!

but many arch systems are "open" like this, as there are so many half-and-half-educated and experienced administrators outta there.

I'm one of these, still, with the age of 43 you begin to anticipate and look with a wider horizon to the whole computer world but you begin also to recognize: "heya, I'm not the fastest any more, the processors of the upcoming generation is inside of them much faster then mine! but "hopp-hopp" is never a solution for a boss to tell hers/his's employees.

Maybe, this is why I do this 24/7 alone for 15 years now... leading style, if at all: "laizes faire" and if I had a company we would do a quick 50/50 chance for BTC up or down in every morning round; couldn't be a very serious company, or? Everyone knows that you can just loose with crypt-currencies at the moment but everybody does it. lost 10 bucks but this was once, never again; rather adrenalin-junking in the bus without ticket. :-)

Sorry for my personal style in here but for me it has to! Not all information is such as dry and without any fun or humour. This is why we do this "job", too, isn't it?

@rpv how long been you at BSD? grown up with this always wanted an expensive PPC?

I grow up with C64 and later with a NES console and now every command I give into the shell goes back to this only light in my shitty, shitty youth! We used to ask people on station for some cash for "phoning" as we said and went with the income to the next arcade-automate.

First install of FreeBSD 2.2.X back in the late 1990s. Had 4 OSes running on a second-hand 386 with 20MB RAM: DOS, Linux, FreeBSD, Minix. First install (for my own use) of both NetBSD and OpenBSD only this year. Not a child of computing--got into it rather late: in my early 20s.

I use the xfce4-terminal, with xterm "export: command not found". I heart only sh accepts export="PKG_PATH=..." or whatever, maybe this is why? But tried, no error message but the same thing at svn up /usr/src

The BeOS re-write? Haven't tried it. Tried BeOS 5.0 back in the early 2000s (still have the last official R5 CD) and liked it then.

                    They are damn far for their evaluation purpose when doing such a high resolution out of the box. Their problem is still the (U)EFI - BIOS to be outsmarted as a BIOS has to be MBR for them. Dot! But they have libreoffice, a gcc10 and I tried to cross-compile it for armhf but gave up as a lack of ressources. It's an old but possible candidate and a lotta pressure on win here;

They aren't well at the moment, I think, as I do not hear anything negative upon open-source and not many battles for users are being done, so maybe they are sleeping their winter-sleep. g I had to buy me free over there and Bill hardly would have let me go to Linux in 1997 (I was a 2.0.32 kernel with KDE 1), still trying to bring me back sometimes.

It isn't a good sign, btw, because if the market-leader because of Corona 19 doesn't get anything in front any more we all need a new system in governments, schools, etc. But there's a idiom, like: there's coming nothing better afterwards or so, and the Macintosh System is simply too expensive for secretaries, etc., but being sold but not the very last paper to 50,0001%! So it is and always was an apple of discord and Steve Jobs would turn around in his grave if he knew what came out with his half and half BSD-system.

This has been like this, coz before nobody was in the situation to just "buy" a computer as they were very expensive in the 70s. The whole progression of development started in the early 90s here in Europe, where everyone got his own computer. I started on PC with DOS 2.1 and Win 2.1 on a notebook for school, I was the only with a device and had to be pilloried for this. Look, now we do distance learning!

But 4 systems on an 386, wow!, Minix: I tried, but as not X'ing (or just with good speech on it) Amsterdams version became quite unpopular in the 2000s for end-users, but always being successful on and in mainframes, etc.

No idea about this virtualization stuff. Sorry. (It's on my TODO list, though.)

nobody anwered here in the forum, either. I'd to put it on your priority-list up to place whatever, 'coz IMHO the future of home-computing is UEFI-Hypervisor-VM!; not even a normal OS anymore, just the hypervisor as a "bootloader", all things necessary to be done. The advantage is that you can start a variety of OSes and games a.s.o., directly without the OS in the background. Humanity is virtualizing itself to: phu! we don't know yet, maybe we loose our physis, just being present as a brain in some gallery somewhere, we as maintainers are probably sometimes back to "planet blue" to fix issues, this would be a recall of Eden! And we know nothing about conscience: it can all be an illusion as the eastern religions teach us. Morph gives me this feeling sometimes to be newborn without any sorrows and pains. Sounds like bad science-fiction, but remember: an average 7-year old American kid spends 8-10 hours / day in front of a screen, maybe it (the LCD) will "eat" us one day! Things like VR glasses and 3D-printers are just prototypes of something great, this is what I clearly can feel here.

How about: "Alexa, please scan me into and print me outta in L.A. !", concerning this 3D-matrix of future...

mutterhunt I use the xfce4-terminal, with xterm "export: command not found".

How stupid of me--you're running csh. Then export won't work. The commands for csh are:

                       setenv LANG de_AT.UTF-8
                       setenv LC_CTYPE "$LANG"
                       setenv LC_ALL ""

Type those commands at the prompt in csh, then try svn or svnlite. Afterwards, put them in either $HOME/.login or $HOME/.cshrc

ha! got it! the warnings disappeared but still no output on

                      svn up /usr/src
                      Updating '/usr/src':
                      At revision 369053.

                      and:

                      svn update --verbose /usr/src
Subcommand 'update' doesn't accept option '-v [--verbose]'

                      and:

                      svnlite update /usr/src
                      Updating '/usr/src':
                      At revision 369053.

this is all I got here! but thx, the missing variables with the $export-command are to be deleted everywhere!

😩 aehmmm....!!! you tell me that I'm using an "old" source tree for a month now?!

                        [OT]:
I'm running around with a 12-STABLE kernel now for a month? So this time it is my winter-sleep here; mutters tend to sleep in winter! I'm always the last who gets to know things here, it seems. I should'a read freebsd-current mailing list with more attention at the end of the year. Why not on Easter seeing 1000s of admins searching for the "easter-egg-reversion-#" :-()

It was not so an good idea IMO to make it a git repo for many cases, although we got root access to the git commands (Linux hasn't!) . Do you know, whom belongs "the cat"?? I do have two of this species here living but they don't like GitHub! Playing dice as capture, what comes next? Pick a captcha-hydrant and pull it into a puzzle?

                        [/OT]

Got my senses back again after 5 minutes of thinking, clear head now: Advantage: not so many .svn/pristine-files to be deleted (slow as small), disadvantage: this nice flickering A, P or U on every file is gone now, looked very professional.
Another thing: you can't watch into the /usr/src directory while receiving and resolving, making a /tmp and copying it to the directory as a last step.

So, what I do immidiateley is:

                        cd /usr/src
                        git clone -b master https://github.com/freebsd/freebsd-src /usr/src
                        nano /usr/src/sys/arch/amd64/config/GENERIC --> LIZBETH
                        make kernel -j5 INSTKERNNAME=LIZBETH_NODEBUG KERNCONF=LIZBETH

I'm curious if vbox-drivers will still do!

Pitty, pitty for SVN from my side (or CVS on netBSD, this was such a nice looking thing and reliable). I know there's a way to use svn further but for now I like Linus coursing, if we use root-GIT! BTW, why do we upload our sources to the most popular sources-tree GitHub (too), being bought by M$ (company, hopefully not the sources) in 2019 on Dec., 26th 2020? I read somehow our financial belongings are sqeezed through giants but not from the very Redmond. There are commercial variants of BSD, aren't they? Something like SOC and I2C (I3C) in the kern at linux (soundcards, network devices, bt and even ACPI), does someone know as to lazy for googeling right now?

                        Thx rvp for this advice!

Is this ok for now, reversion-# is r368557. Why is it not this big as the one I have now: r368997? Does STABLE has bigger reversion-numbers? Or do I make something wrong, latest change on this github-site is 2 minutes ago, so it's the right one, isn't it? And: can I use the SVN still and how? How to update with git? git pull doesn't work.

As a punishment due for this I rebuil(d)t the world on this old intel running amd64-versions afterwards, ok?

                        Lizbeth

P.S: my machine has to do the at least 6 hours of compiling for just the kernel and about 28 hours of building the userland with running X, what shouldn't be done, nothing is this night with the FAHClient (foldingathome) running, but this didn't work for SETI didn't either, understood? When will people stop to tell freeBSD is a game with the devil just because of our mascot? a fat penguin is better, or? starry, starry, night, perhaps they never will :-) (song by Lianne de Havas as a personal recommendation).
