Hello; I have this problem from the first boot after installation. The memory usage is normal but it grows exponentially. The memory that gets consumed won't be returned to the system. after 14hrs of computer just setting idle the memory would grow about 5GB. at first I thought it is about firefox but removing it from the equation did nothing. the whole system is the culprit. tell him to relax as this is cache and normal once free memory will be required it will be reclaimed and htop is not perfect here better to use top

well. No it is @"nia"#43 ; because the system gets sluggish. even the ls on a home directory takes a second to return the prompt. I can't open other windows anymore and the system gets unresponsive. So; your theory is wrong.

same thing here, netbsd quickly "fills up" all 8gb of ram, but i figured it was some cache-mechanism in play here.. my system does not slow down at all

This must be something new to 9? I'm running 8.1 and never see 100% or even close. I would like to see the output of vmstat -m. I didn't read anything in the release notes that would indicate such a change to memory management. You're not running ZFS?

Your pool cache (vcachepl) has a lot of requests and no releases (dah!) so what have you got running on that system that requires this cache?
Again, I'm not sure if this is some new "feature" of 9, but it seems odd. What's your swap situation?

I am a bit confused, your first screen shot doesn't show full memory usage, only about less than 50%. oh, ok, I see it grows in 3rd shot.

johnb Nothing out of the ordinary. As expected Firefox is a memory hog and I wouldn't bet my house on it not being the source of a memory leak.

Memory usage is ok, even if it hits 100% PROVIDING it releases whatever cache to the current processes or swaps stuff out or both. It only becomes a problem when the system becomes unresponsive, as it seems is your issue.

All I can suggest is if you see it heading to greater than 70% to start sampling with vmstat -m and ps aux and swapctl -l and wait until you can sample no more.
A shell script perhaps:

Back to your problem. I'm not sure of your competency with shell scripting, so please excuse me if I treat you like a n00b... 😀
Anyway, if you run a shell script like the one I wrote above, but wrap it in a while:

..etc..
sleep 600
done
Also change the vmstat command to:
vmstat -CmWv
That will give more info on the kernel memory usage. We might also need some output from pmap, but at present this should do.
Then run this script in the background in a directory of its own. You determine the amount of sleep time (I wrote it for 10 minutes in the example).
The earlier you can run it, then better. Then when the system becomes unresponsive, note the time and what you did (ie killing processes) to get back to a usable system.

Post the first, middle and last reports so I can have a look at them.

The chances are when it becomes unresponsive is when it's attempting to swap idle process space to swap space.
What's the storage? HDD or SSD/NVMe?

yes, my usage is almost identical.. it fills up memory almost to 100%.. maybe some internal caching thingie.. it did the same in 8.0, and if i remember correctly also in 7.0
