anarchosax there are a lot of widow managers and you can install them all. I am partial to kde
but it's a resource hog. Most of my machines have twm
, ctwm
, openbox
, and xfce
installed. I use them all at different times, and I also use X without a window manager at times. I also use the virtual terminals a lot. I tend to build my own kernel just to get white on green text. I also use cool-retro-term
sometimes; amazingly the default configuration looks exactly like the terminal I used for years.
If you install kde
you get the kdm
greeter which lets you easily switch between environments at boot. Also I keep scripts in my home directory to start each window manager.
Keep in mind that most of them are highly configurable. ctwm
with the included background patterns, conky
(or macchina
), and all the things I normally use in the main menu; makes for a visually pleasing, very productive, and lightning fast setup. When I get a chance, I'll post my .ctwmrc
so you can see what I mean.
Also you can pretend you are using an Amiga, and have separate screens with multiple different environments at the same time. You just have to break the habit of trying to switch between them with LAmiga-M.
