Connecting with a remote desktop session to NetBSD from Linux

Hello everyone, what do you suggest as protocol/ and client/server to connect graphically to my netbsd machine?

I would like to run graphical applications and see them through my linux machine.

Is RDP what i need?
I tried x11vnc as server and remmina on linux as a client but seems pretty slow to say the truth.

I don't think RDP is really used with unix in general and if graphical means OpenGL or something similar you shouldn't expect all that much. Having said that you could look into TightVNC/TurboVNC those should perform at least a bit better than x11vnc and to my best knowledge are as good as a prebuild solution is going to get.

I usually use vncserver as server on netbsd and xvncviewer on ubuntu. The other way around on ubuntu I use vino-server and vncviewer on netbsd. However, for one of the two directions which I cannot recall I had to set back ubuntu to Xorg display instead of wayland.

UPDATE: sorry, first I wrote tightvnc for whatever reasons but after rereading it I realized that in reality it's vncserver what I use 🙂

r0ller I found that it is ok for me to use ssh with X forwarding.
Is it an option you guys use?

netbsdnoob Not really. X's client/server model is kinda clunky in my opinion and i don't like the idea of adding yet another layer on top of it. It's also not exactly well suited for slower/high latency connections due to requiring a lot of back and forth if i remember correctly. I've used x2go for a while though (it's basically network optimized X forwarding and works quite nicely - if it works...) but all the incompatibility issues drove me away. That's just my personal point of view though, so if X forwarding does the job for you there's probably no need to throw more complexity at the problem.

Do you need encryption? I've used X without SSH but not anytime recently...

I use VNC with no issues.
