boot+root on zfs base system as a bunch of packages for easier updates (someone is/was working on this...) import Ed Schouten's cloudabi patchset more ARM64 SoCs (jmcneill@ has been absolutely phenomenal at this).

Easy: Better cross-compiling infrastructure for packages AMD64 -> Armv7, Armv8 FreeBSD has poudriere/jails/qemu. John Marino (before he was kicked out) developed gnatcross-aarch64 to do it better (so I think it's probably a dport on DragonflyBSD). I know he was working on NetBSD, so I'm surprised he didn't continue this. NetBSD? Kludge.

I only own x86_64 hardware, but I'm happy to see that the OS lives up to the moto "Of course it runs NetBSD" and is introducing new platforms to the already extensive list 🙂 Honestly, and unlike what others have written, my hard drives are small and CoW file systems are of no use to me. Sorry, but I don't really care about zfs and if its introduced, I do hope the possibility to run FFSv2 is kept, its good enough to me. I would then be able to convert a few family machines, currently running on Ubuntu base, to NetBSD. They want their Netflix 🤔 Personally, I'd like to see a clean-up of the pkgsrc tree. There're loads of packages, where the upstream project is either abandoned or dead. That's a lot of resources being used to patch and maintain software, that could be otherwise pulling/packaging more useful things. But, that's probably just me, as I'm a minimalist but also a modernist 😉 Along similar lines, a base system clean-up would be nice, e.g. why twm and ctwm in base? I know they are small, but a wm should be a users choice and one is more than enough. A similar thought goes for the number of shells in base and few other unnecessary things. I always remove /games and ctwm and I keep away from linux-emul . Again, no big deal, just a thought. One thing, though... More and more things are done on a web-browser, so maybe time to think about how to keep the browser up-to-date. I'm happy running firefox , but it would be nice to have it updated in between Q-releases. I know, I can build it from pkgsrc-current , but I'd like to stick to one release.

[deleted] Yes, I'm perfectly aware of that. Its all in the hands of google and not on the hands of the OS. I just think it sucks. Netflix uses FreeBSD and even contributes back to it, but FreeBSD users can not watch Netflix because it uses google's widevine 👿 The only reason it works on Linux, if you're using the standard glibC , which I don't, my Linux machine runs on musl , is because it has to work on ChromeOS The choice of OS should have nothing to do with it . Lima drivers for mali4xx gpus and newer amdgpu version. Default PKG_PATH set to correct versions and architecture. Easier install process. Maybe dialog that tells you "Reboot or open shell in installed system" at the end of installation?

I too work from home 2 - 3 days a week but, I have to do that from my Windows 10 laptop and using Google chrome 🙁

Damn, that's tough. I get to use whichever browser I want thankfully. I was using Vivaldi for a long time on my work (windows 10) laptop. But now I use Firefox for syncing open tabs.

The only "issue" I've had is that, on its first run, LXQt asks for the window manager to use.
This came as a surprise as OpenBox is a dependency of the LXQt package, so is expected to be preconfigured.
However, this is not specific to NetBSD.
Past this surprise, everything works flawlessly, and damn fast!

I've also noticed numix-gtk-theme includes an OpenBox theme which, used in conjunction with the Ambiance LXQt theme, gives a look and feel similar to what I'm used to under MATE.

Yeah, that's a "feature" of the DE. If you build it from source you can choose xfce4-wm instead.

Only of the meta-pkg, you can actually install the components without the meta-pkg itself.
Do ask if you want a custom build, it's rather easy to leave some things out.

FeatherPad is a Qt equivalent of pluma (MATE) or gedit (Gnome) and that's a good thing to have in a desktop environment.

However, to edit very large text files or to develop applications, I use Geany on MATE and was looking for a Qt replacement. Geany is said to be an IDE, but it's IMO more a powerful and fast editor for developers than a true IDE like CodeBlocks or Eclipse. However, it is sufficient for many development tasks.

Both Notepadqq and Textosaurus fit in this category and seem to be actively developed.

I've had a look at the Textosaurus project files and it only requires the following Qt modules: core gui widgets network printsupport svg. 🙂

With this patch applied, libtextosaurus compiles correctly, but the linking fails. The Makefile produces the following command:

As you can see, the name of the output file is missing after the -o option, so a 9 MB a.out file is produced instead of libtextosaurus.so. If I fix this manually and continue with a "make install", make tells me "Nothing to be done for 'install'." 😠

The commands I executed to get there are:

I've run make > cmd, edited cmd to add libtextosaurus.so after the -o option and ran sh cmd. It produces libtextosaurus.so instead of a.out, that's all. It doesn't fix the next issue, which is that make install doesn't copy libtextosaurus.so to /usr/pkg/lib.

Furthermore, I may be wrong, but I think there should be a .a or .sa file to copy along with the .so and it is not produced.

Finally, when installing libraries, there is usually a symlink to the latest version in the lib directory, i.e. the .so file name should be libtextosaurus-0.9.11.so and there should be a libtextosaurus.so symlink in the same directory pointing at libtextosaurus-0.9.11.

This tends to indicate that qmake produces an incorrect Makefile. I guess qmake has already been used to build other Qt applications on NetBSD, so we can assume it is correct. The only remaining possibility is that qmake invocation for this application must be different on NetBSD, either by supplying additional command line arguments, or by tweaking the .pro files. 🙁

BTW, re-reading build.pro, I've realized I should have cloned the repo with the --recurse-submodules option. However, it doesn't solve the linking problem.

I've also seen that textosaurus requires C++17 but gcc implements only C++14, so I installed gcc10 and gcc10-libs and modified my PATH to use it, but it doesn't seem to be sufficient to get C++17 support.
