Hi there lovely NetBSD folks.
I've spent the past couple days trying to get 9.3 or 10 Beta going on bare metal on my Lenovo E14 2nd Gen. This is an Intel i5-1135G7 11th gen CPU from 2020. I understand that may be too new. It seems like both 9.3 and 10 complain about acpibat0 and/or acpibut0. Unfortunately, Lenovo / Intel decided that from 2020 on, there will be no more boot in Legacy BIOS mode. This machine is right on the wrong side of that decision so I must boot in UEFI. I tried booting a BIOS mode NetBSD usb stick and the machine refused to consider the possibility.
I have now moved to Hyper-V (because I need Windows on this machine for other stuff anyway) and running NetBSD 10 beta in a Gen 2 VM in Hyper-V. That works fine! There is an occasional console log message about no more events from acpibat0, but then things continue fine.
So, I'm ok for now running in Hyper-V, but I'd much rather run on bare metal on a separate SSD (the E14 allows for 2 SSDs). Right now, I cannot successfully boot the installed 10.0 or 9.3 -- I've been able to install them both at different times on a Samsung 960. But boot inevitably fails after the wedge list. I've tried turning everything off in the BIOS. When I "ctrl-alt-esc" during the boot hang, it's just waiting around, not doing anything. In a mwait state, IIRC.
So, any advice? If the suggestion is "wait a couple years for cpu support" then I understand. Or if the suggestion is "try x" that would be awesome.
Thanks! Love the BSD and in particular NetBSD community here! 🇦🙂
