I use to work with those SMD Disks, now a story:
We had 3 manufacturing plants, each plant has 4 or 5 minis,depending upon site. Each mini had 4 to 8 of these drives, all 256mb. If a head crash occurred, you would hear a whining. When a head crash occurs, sometime it destroyed the hardware, so extensive testing would need to be done before using either the platters or drive. Usually you would take the platters out and mark the drive as unusable so hardware people can check it out. Usually the platters were toast in a head crash.
I was an operator on third shift at the main plant, at the another plant, a new operator heard the whining. So the manager at the other plant wanted to make sure. He took the platter pack and tried in in another drive, and continued down the line. It turned out he trashed 4 drives by mounting the bad platters on them. That was a big issue because the main system was down at that plant for a few days while new drives could be found or procured.
Since that time, all the operators started calling that "doing a hampy", hampy was a nick name for the manager and it was based upon his very long last name.
