pin Exactly. I remember when the huge announcement dropped about X being abandoned and then... nothing really changed. I am not sure anymore who did the announcement but i have this vague memory of it originating somewhere around the poettering crowd (don't quote me on this, it's been a while and i might be mixing stuff up)?
While X truly has a lot of warts (not overly surprising - how old is the codebase by now? 35 years?) and there obviously is some room for improvement, X dying in an instant simply won't happen. It's not like it needs a lot of updates to stay alive anyways, so even IF it gets neglected over longer periods of time that won't change much.
Also i have a somewhat bad feeling when it comes to wayland. Admittedly i haven't tried it (there's no obvious gain for me) and like i said X's design and code isn't something i'd call pleasant but i fear that wayland will mostly be a vehicle for GTK3-like monstrosities of dubious usefulness at the cost of even more portability.
