Hello to everyone. I'm a new net-bsd user. I'm learning and trying this OS. The first step is to configure correctly the resolution of my screen. On my PC I have 3 graphic cards : 1) 000:02:0: Intel UHD Graphics 630 (VGA display, revision 0x02) 2) 001:00:0: NVIDIA product 1e04 (VGA display, revision 0xa1) : (NVIDIA RTX 2080ti) 3) 002:00:0: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB (VGA display, revision 0xa1) Good. On the BIOS I have configured the Intel UHD Graphics 630 as primary GPU device. In addition I have installed XFCE4. The problem that I have is that I can't increase the default resolution that have been chosen automatically,that's 1024x768. Probably I haven't installed the correct driver,I don't know. marietto It's probably because your GPU is too new. NetBSD 9.x supports Intel GPUs up to and including Kaby Lake, with DRM implementation equal to Linux 4.4. Here's the link for 9.0 Announcement which mentions the DRM version. EDIT: UHD 630 is Coffee Lake and supported in Linux since around 4.13.

I already said this on reddit, but you shouldn't use modular-xorg with the official binary packages. They're built for native X only. Coffee Lake is indeed too new for the DRM/KMS stack in 9, but you should still be able to get the correct resolution with gop+wsfb.

I have attached the screen to the HDMI port of the UHD 630,not on the NVIDIA card. And on the BIOS,I have chosen the UHD 630 as primary,not the NVIDIA card. I want to use the UHD 630 as primary graphic card and I want to make the NVIDIA card available to be passed thru with qemu + nvmm. About this : do u know if the pass thru of my graphic card can work on NetBSD ?

There will be no packages named -whatever. What I meant by that is: remove whatever other Xorg-related packages you may have installed.

You should also remove the dependencies that were installed:

pkgin -y autoremove

Interesting. I've never seen this before. Can you note down what a plain gop command prints at the bootloader prompt?
BTW, you don't need to comment out that gop command. You just have to realize that it is only useful for wsfb

The i915 drm driver hasn't taken over. Only the genfb drivers are running on all 3 cards. Looks like @neubaer and @nia were right: your card is very probably not supported.
NetBSD has chosen one of the nvidia cards for primary output. @nia says that NetBSD doesn't support multiple graphics cards, so to make the Intel card the primary one, you'll have to either a) disable the other cards in BIOS, or b) physically take them out.

~~You could also try:~~

userconf=disable genfb1

This above won't work. You might need to compile a custom kernel with a line like:

genfb0          at pci0 dev 2 function 0

That might do the trick.

I think you may have installed packages with a lot of dependencies, then removed them, and never issued an autoremove until now. If you remove any package, you generally have to follow it up with an autoremove

marietto That tree is only intended for compiling the kernel, not the userland (referece: https://github.com/riastradh/netbsd-src/issues/29)

To compile only the kernel:

mkdir ~/obj ~/tools
./build.sh -U -u -j4 -m amd64 -O ~/obj -T ~/tools tools
./build.sh -U -u -j4 -m amd64 -O ~/obj -T ~/tools kernel=GENERIC

The last command should print the location of the compiled kernel after it finishes.

Then just backup your current /netbsd as /onetbsd, and copy over the new kernel as /netbsd and reboot. If booting the new kernel fails, the bootloader automatically tries /onetbsd, so after you finish booting use uname -a to discover what kernel is running.

The screen is turned off if enabling or disabling nouveau and / or i915drmkms. Inside xorg.conf is not accepted intel and modesetting.

From a user standpoint, there's really no practical advantage in preferring BSD over a user-friendly Linux distro in day to day usage, be it desktop or server. The main reason you see people using BSD here, is that they got interested in these systems at some point, appreciated some of their features, their design choices, their development model or their community and decided they wanted to dig deeper into them, learn them.

While personally I started using FreeBSD before Linux, I would have never considered installing BSD weren't it for a true interest in learning, understanding and having fun with a system which wouldn't have hidden what was going on beneath the surface.

Man pages are possibly the best maintained and the most reliable source of information on BSDs, and it's really hard to imaging leaving without. Not seldom will they provide the provide the proper answer to any question and it's safe to assume every BSD user will have to look up man pages sooner or later, so the sooner one starts the easier will dealing with BSD in everyday life turn out.

Do not get me wrong, the fact you're just getting started with this is pretty understandable; everything seems a little bit alien and keeping track of all the info you're given is not a easy task. And while it's not hard to relate (everybody has gone through it at a certain point), I still recommend you to try to be a little bit keener to cooperate and look up official documentation.

Worth noticing this forum is populated by non technical users who work outside of IT.

Of course this won't start: In this configuration you've disabled both your DRM drivers and then you're asking to run the modesetting X display driver which needs DRM kernel drivers. modesetting won't work on genfb. The only X display driver which will work on genfb is wsfb

Multiple reasons could account for this:

The new kernel doesn't have the MAX_RESOLUTION changes because you compiled the kernel with -u.
Solution: compile only the kernel again, this time, omit the -u flag to do a full rebuild of the kernel.
(Really, -u is for developers. Users should just rebuild the whole kernel from scratch.)
You've specified a serial console and/or are running in a VM.
Solution: Run on the regular console and actual HW. Also without -s (single-user mode)
You've made the Intel card the primary in BIOS, but, have disabled i915drmkms and this confuses NetBSD nouveau DRM driver.
Solution: If the Intel card is selected in BIOS, then nouveau should be disabled. And vice versa.
In both cases, the Xorg display driver should be modesetting. Make sure you re-create the DRM devices in /dev before starting X.

Q: Is it possible to disable the unwanted graphic adapters completely in your BIOS instead of only selecting which one to make primary?

Your GPU HW or HW combination is not supported yet.
Solution: report with full dmesg/Xorg.log on the Github issues page.

These logs don't help at all. Here, you've disabled both the Intel and Nvidia DRM drivers--after which the safe genfb framebuffer driver takes over (which we already know works), and then you're trying to run the modesetting X driver on genfb (which is invalid--modesettingonly works if the kernel DRM drivers are enabled).

Since we want to make DRM work, enable the Intel DRM driver (first), then boot into it.
Set up sshd (instead of using a serial console) so that you can log into the system to shut it down safely in case the display becomes unusable.
