Thanks, I appreciate the perspective. It's interesting to me because when I first set out to use NetBSD (for the sole purpose of learning about classic UNIX) one of my main goals was to try and use only the original UNIX tools. I caved immediately with vi
as I already knew vim
, and my machine isn't so old that vim
has much (if any at all) of an impact on performance.
It's funny you mention that vi
is good for scripting, editing config files and system maintenance, because that is literally all I need an editor for. I really have no need for complexity or extensibility in the tools that I use at all. I suppose in a way that is why I've stuck with vim
over neovim
on NetBSD.
Perhaps I'll try to get used to nvi
a bit more and try to fulfill my original goal. I do like me some syntax highlighting tho... π€€
