Sysupgrade config not found.

Hello,

I am new to NetBSD. Been trying to upgrade from NetBSD 9.1 to 9.2 via sysupgrade auto 'link to the 9.2' as in the manual. But, I get 'Sysupgrade config not found' & 'failed to determine kernel name: please set kernel name explicitly'.

Kindly request you to help me understand the requirement here. Thank you.

medictruck By no means an expert but I tried sysupgrade in a virtual machine just today, upgrading from NetBSD 9.1 to 9.2. I installed sysupgrade via pkgin though.

I typed in this command as root:

sysupgrade auto http://cdn.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-9.2/amd64

Note the http:// rather than https:// and that uppercase/lowercase must be respected. It initially failed because I'd typed "netbsd" in the url.

Is that how you went about it?

You need to edit /usr/pkg/etc/sysupgrade.conf.

Based on the OP's message I suppose doing the following should solve the issue, right?

cp /usr/pkg/share/examples/sysupgrade/default.conf /usr/pkg/etc/sysupgrade.conf

Myself, I installed sysupgrade from pkgin and didn't have to copy any config file so I was all set. Just needed to get that url right.

nia Modifying KERNEL= around line 19-ish of /usr/pkg/etc/sysupgrade.conf to be KERNEL=GENERIC will probably do the trick. That's all it took for me to get past that same error message.

My guess—being new to NetBSD myself—is that config is from one of the sets you didn't install. Perhaps "Compiler tools."

I did the way you initially replied me too. I will try copying in this command to check & report back. Btw, I went through the upgrade routine via installation way. That went smooth. But, I will satiate my curiosity by trying this as well. Something to learn for future. Thanks.
