Fixing a Messed Up System

Hello all I messed up my system, by installing some packages from 9.1 and other compiled with -current.
Is there a way to keep my files but reinstall the whole thing?

Like remove all packages i installed? i mean both binary packages and compiled packages?
What do you recommend? how can i fix my system?

netbsdnoob There's no need to reinstall. Bellow I'm assuming you want to run 9.1 with pkgsrc-current.

make sure pkgin knows about all your manually compiled packages, run pkgin update
remove all your installed packages using the package manager
cd into /usr and rm -r pkgsrc/
Edit /usr/pkg/etc/pkgin/repositories.conf and point it to http://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/pkgsrc/packages/NetBSD/amd64/9.0_current/All/
run pkgin update and pkgin full-upgrade
reinstall the packages you need
Download the pkgsrc tarball for current from http://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/pkgsrc/current/, you want the pkgsrc.tar.gz file
Assuming this was downloaded to your Downloads directory, cd into it and run as root tar -xzf pkgsrc.tar.gz -C /usr
Once unpacked you can remove the tarball

Just a question, didn't we say that both pkgsrc and pkkin should point to the same versions?
I mean in this case we are making point the binaries to 9.1 right? andthe source to -current?
Correct me if I am wrong.

Also what if I wanted to setup -current also for my system instead of 9.1 ?

Yes and they are.
Let's see if we get this right. You can run pkgsrc-current on the STABLE base, you don't need to run NetBSD-HEAD for that.

If you prefer to stick with the quaternary branch you should instead point the repositories.conf to http://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/pkgsrc/packages/NetBSD/amd64/9.0_2021Q1/All/
and pull the pkgsrc.tar.gz from http://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/pkgsrc/pkgsrc-2021Q1/

Other than that the instructions are the same 😉

pin I am not interested in running quarterly!

Ok maybe i got it... let's see:
BSDs do not behave like GNU/Linux, htey are split into two parts the Core OS and then the external Packages.
Those are detached from each other. So i can run NetBSD-STABLE/RELEASE or CURRENT independently from pkgsrc quarterly / current and so on.

So the advice to not mess up is not much having NetBSD-CURRENT coupled with pkgsrc-current BUT
having pkgsrc-current (binary) with pkgsrc-current (source) so tracking the same stuff with pkgsrc.

Did I get this right?
