I know this is a few days early, but I probably wont get time to post this before xmas otherwise.

I just wanted to say Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to everyone here at UnitedBSD 🎄

This has been a a pretty mental year for everyone, with lock-down/quarantine still in full affect in many places of the world. I live in Melbourne and we had one of the worst outbreaks in Australia, at one point in stage 4 lock-down (literally needing a permit to leave home for non-essential travel). Thankfully we are no longer under any restrictions. 🥳

During the nearly 8 months of isolation this year I was unable to have much contact with friends and even family so I buried my head in the only indoor hobbies I have; drinking beer and messing with computers. I have been so amazed by the quality and content of this forum and it's users, and I have you all to thank for your help over this past year. So many of you are extremely knowledgeable and best of all willing to share your knowledge with us new starters. It's been nearly 2 years now since I started using NetBSD and while I'm still in the noob camp I am slowly becoming more confident in my own abilities, thanks entirely to this community. So thank you all very much. 🙏

I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday. Hug your family members and friends (if your allowed to), keep wearing your masks in public places (covid isn't gone yet..) and be kind to strangers (like you have been to me).

Merry Christmas to you all, and especially to NetBSD and OpenBSD.

I have donated to NetBSD as I said I would. I would like very much to donate to OpenBSD but it is just a little more difficult (I'm only saying that with the payment method I had and preferred, NetBSD made it a little easier).

I think very highly of these two projects, and wish them (as well as the extremely helpful people here) a happy 2021.

That output looks neat, but, running the generated python file (using python2) just gives me coloured blocks running up the right-hand edge of the screen and numbers between 11 and 33 running up the left edge--on a white background. Is this supposed to work in a text console--(because I don't see any scaling being applied to the numbers passed to the functions)? Is it too late for Christmas?

No, I'm happy just one person looked at it and replied. I loved your awk thing and I made this for someone else and thought I'd post it here, though with timezones and all I think everybody had already been winding down Christmas or something by the time they might have seen it.

I never trust cut and paste completely, so I made sure to run the Python output code I posted since I'm sure nobody wants to compile the code I put up here-- I still wanted to show what the code and the result looked like.

At the resolution needed, you're going to want to run xterm with the font size (CTRL-right-click) set to "unreadable" and the window will need to be at least 750x950. Surprisingly nothing gave me the text geometry so I copied and pasted it to a text file and ran wc, it had about 458 lines (including extra whitespace) and 203179 bytes, so I figure the text resolution is about 444x458. That means each text "pixel" is about (or exactly) 2x2 graphical pixels.

My windows are tiled so "half of a big screen" at that font seems to work. If you have a "big screen" it is probably bigger than what I call a "big screen", but 750x950 should do it. I assumed that people would just look at this https://i.ibb.co/L6QKMw1/tree.png -- it's cool that you ran the code.

flfederation Ho! Ho! Ho! With the correct font, font-size and geometry this works as advertised. Here's how anyone can run this:

rvp Fantastic! Thanks for the trick that makes the pixels even smaller.

This language used to support Pygame-- in fact the graphics commands automatically used Pygame if it was available, but switched to text emulation if it wasn't. There were also commands to do text by default and switch back and forth.

If I'd known there was a way to make the text even smaller in xterm, I would have opted for that and made the tree and ornaments "taller" in that geometry. It's a bit stubby this way, but I like the smaller "pixels".

Yeah, I noticed that. A consequence of chosen font and its aspect-ratio. A better approximation to your picture is by using a TrueType font like DejaVu and a font-size of 2. But, then you get a huge xterm window...and I don't want a General Sherman in my living-room for Christmas.

Hey there,
I couldnt rly find a good place to post, which works, but this thread looks pretty unspecific replywise.
I'm quite happy, that i found this forum, cause it looks pretty perfect for some questions i have, as a bsd noob/newcomer.
First thing after reading the guidelines, and searching for existing topics, was wanting to start asking some questions, so i went to "General", as it is the most appropriate place, but i just cant find any button to create a topic! Just like in any other more specific subcategory!
Is there a permission manager, and i need to be whitelisted first, and a disclaimer is just missing?
Is it just to late, i drank to much beer, and am a bit blind?
I verified by mail, also, but nothing changes!
Am a bit perplex right now, feel like i can understand my dad in front of a PC the first time, could anyone help?

Edit: I cant reply to topics, finally after half an hour or so of searching and fiddling around a disclaimer for this post, "Awaiting approval", that's helpfull, thx.
@Admin, @Jay right?, could you plz implement some form of disclaimer telling fresh users about this permission thing, if i wasn't blind?
