You should see something like this for the touchpad to be active:
$ dmesg | fgrep pms
[ 1.009371] pms0 at pckbc2 (aux slot)
[ 1.009371] wsmouse0 at pms0 mux 0

Is the touchpad disabled in BIOS? On my BIOS you can enable/disable the "Internal Pointing Device" in [Advanced].
