GhostBSD is based on FreeBSD and just adds a graphical environment out of the box. I, as a novice, just right for a start

I've only just installed it on this laptop, but previously I ran the @jcs fork of ratpoison that it is based on, on and off for a while. Happy to help if there are any curly ones, it should tie in pretty closely with ratpoison documentation though.

XDMCP bits were removed not because of known unpatched vulnerabilities (otherwise any other *nix system around would be currently vulnerable), but because XDMCP happens to be an extremely old and obsolete telnet-like protocol, which is inherently insecure as it does not encrypt your traffic. Can't see why somebody would opt for it in 2021 (nobody I'm aware of as a matter for fact), given the many valid and more reliable alternatives around for remote desktop management, even among the simple/lightweight ones (.e.g. ssh-X11-forwarding).

Xenodm is more of 'light' fork of XDM, always kept in sync with freedesktop's upstream and developed in parallel with it; afaict Xenodm is indeed XDM without XDMCP and patched to support BSDAuth as opposed to OpenPAM.
From a user perspective this doesn't change practically nothing so if @pfr wanted to theme XDM for it to look like OpenBSD's login screen, they might as well borrow the /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources file from OpenBSD's sources.

startx works just fine on OpenBSD-6.8. It's how I run X.

Most Xorg servers these days don't need to run with root powers: OpenBSD's and Linux's don't; FreeBSD uses a setuid wrapper--the main program is ordinary. All of them use the modesetting driver. If you have working DRMKMS on NetBSD, you can remove the setuid bit from Xorg and use startx to run it. My intel driver works just fine like this. Don't know if running via xdm etc. still needs a setuid X.

Ok, a WIP screenshot... I'm trying out a light theme for the first time. I'm still using frankenwm with unibar however this light theme was heavily inspired by the sdorfehs screenshot

The system info fetch is actually something I hacked together. It's pretty much the code from ufetch thrown together with some ascii art that I found on someone else's custom MacOS fetch.

xwd -root -silent | xwdtopnm | pnmtopng > aliased to dumproot 🍻

Interestingly, this method doesn't show the X cursor in the shot which is a bonus!

I'm used to pipe xwd through either netpbm commands (like you did above) or ImageMagick (convert can handle .xwd among the others, you just need to clarify the format on the command line) depending on which of the 2 I've installed (not infrequently both):

XWD/ImageMagick script to take a root window dump and name it after current date:
