Is NetBSD a good start to learn Unix?

I really like NetBSD, but some people keep telling me that I should learn FreeBSD and it's easy to start first. Is there anyone who have played around NetBSD and can understand how Operating Systems with NetBSD. Also, when you back to FreeBSD can you still understand how it works?

miracle2511 it's good choice to learn Unix .. also you can look at BSDcertification to learn about all BSDs.

Jay But it still in process, although it is worth to know and I will read it in the future but is there any good books or something has done kinda like that. I need at least one book or anything which have completely done to improve my knowledge.

i always felt that the unix mantra was always "simplicity", and in that sense netbsd and openbsd are perfect for learning unix.. i think openbsd is more simple, but a walled garden of sorts, netbsd is more open, hackable, but quirky and more of an acquired taste.. dont know about you guys, but freebsd "feels" more like a linux than bsd to me

Well, I guess the best way is delete Windows which used two partitions on my disk. Man, I will miss my games so much, but I need to grew up so that I can learn more new thing (oh I has bought Minecraft so maybe it can run on BSD). Before I switch, is there anyway I can run Microsoft Office in Linux or BSD? LibreOffice isn't fit with me so much and it can make me fail the test.

What are you doing here? Are you adventuring your studies because you want to try *nix and you call it growing-up?

Why don't you get yourself a second hand machine? It doesn't need to cost you much. People these days tend to throw way stuff, just because there's some dust in the fan or,
because its old and they think they need the latest model.
My first NetBSD laptop was from an IT dump. I spent the equivalent of $20 USD to buy a small SSD and that was enough.

So, do yourself a favour and get a second machine instead, play with it until you are sure you don't need Microsoft. I can tell you, there are no Windows machines at home, though I have to use it at work.

As for Microsoft Office, the answer is no.
You can run it through Wine or in a virtual machine but not natively, at least not yet. M$ is always looking to make more money and I heard they might release a *nix compatible version soon.

When I'm browsing on the Internet, I heard a "legend" (it comes from an old Vietnamese hacker website) said that Unix style is still alive somewhere and people say that BSD is really like Unix, so I start learn C and then come to here. I want to know what I'm doing and how thing works. I really want to learn deep about Operating System, Networking and many things (It is a long list but I can say that I really want to learn more about Computer worlds). Also, I hope that I can learn something from some BSD users, because some of them hold the "successful key" which I always dream to have it.

Sadly, there isn't any store sell old stuff like that. If it is exists in my city, I would buy EVERYTHING from it but sadly it's not exist. People around me seem like new than old so they always sell new stuff. And when compare my laptop 4Gb Ram and HDD just a rubbish to them. Spending money in a poor communist country have to spend it respectable if you want to see the morning light everyday.

pin is right, Don't wipe your HDD. I have only recently started using NetBSD for the first time and I decided to buy a second hand laptop to try it out first.

Might I suggest you try NetBSD in VirtualBox first? Especially if you need your computer for school, you shouldn't risk it.

I have no idea where in the world you're located. Where I am we have so called "dangerous or big waste" dumps. This is where people go to get rid of empty paint buckets, old fridges, TVs, furniture, etc.

Make a list of what you need Micro$oft products for and if you can replace the needs with an opensource alternative.
How much are you willing/can you compromise? After all, its your needs.
