Jay I use this repo and it seems to work fine for me
The ki.nu/pkgsrc last update was on Feb 22.
That said, Makoto keeps providing very reliable builds based on pkgsrc-current on a regular basis. The only difference is that he now uploads them to the main server.
Check https://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/pkgsrc/packages/NetBSD/amd64/9.0_current/
This means that these will get reproduced across the mirrors providing binary packages around the world.
Moreover, Makoto does builds almost every second day, optimizing them until they have only a relative small number of broken packages. Only these "optimized" builds are then uploaded.
Please note that a few upstream deprecated packages that, for some strange reason hang around in the tree, are broken by default and should actually be removed.
Since I start using Makoto's builds about a year ago, the frustration is gone 😉
20-100 the BSD way to manage packages is a real PITA
This has nothing to do with package management, pkgin
is not broken, the builds are. Yet, Makoto's builds are working which means, there is nothing wrong with the quality of the tree. Sure, it can always be improved and its always being improved, but if Makoto can produce reliable builds, the weakest-link must be somewhere else.
doug213 just use pkgsrc.. its simpler than depending on some repo.. on my machines i never install pkgin
Sorry but, this won't bring any new users to NetBSD. Also, when I started using NetBSD I wanted to build a very minimal system and check how constrained it could be while, still being functional. This is no longer the goal, as I'm on NetBSD to stay but, I'm still using my 30Gb SSD. So, building all my packages from source is not an option. Yes, I will eventually replace this with a larger SSD that will allow me to build a larger number of packages from source. Although, I do find this a waste of resources. If I build from source and my neighbour builds from source, we have wasted twice the energy needed (not really of course, as sharing it is not for free). Multiply this across the world and... it isn't the most effective way 🙁
@20-100 if you are on amd64 (Makoto only builds for this arch) and, if you don't mind running pkgsrc-current... you know 😉
All this said, if one still wants to use the official builds, please keep an eye on pkgsrc-bulk or, at least look at it before you update, it will be less stressful.
EDIT: WARNING, anyone changing repos to track pkgsrc-current should also align local copies of the pkgsrc-tree with the current tree!!! Mixing branches will result in a broken system.
Also just so its clear, one can track pkgsrc-current on NetBSD-9, no need to run HEAD for that.
