Hello everyone,
I'm running NetBSD and encountering an issue with xpaint where the top menu bar text renders as garbled/corrupted characters (glyphs appear distorted across the menu bar), despite having 75dpi and 100dpi bitmap fonts installed and configured in my X11 font path.
I've attached a screenshot illustrating the menu font corruption.
Environment:
Display Manager: XDM
Window Manager / Desktop: IceWM
Troubleshooting already attempted:
1 - Installed and verified core X11 bitmap font packages (font-adobe-75dpi, font-adobe-100dpi) and checked the font path via xset q.
2 - Passed direct parameters such as -menufont "DejaVu Sans...", which seems to fail because the Xaw/Xt toolkit expects a traditional XLFD string rather than modern Xft/Fontconfig font names.
3 - Attempted running with a forced locale (LC_ALL=C xpaint) to check for UTF-8 vs ISO-8859-1 conversion issues.
Questions:
1 - Is the default xpaint package in pkgsrc compiled against standard libXaw or libXaw3d without Xft support enabled by default?
2 - Are there specific .Xresources definitions required for Xpaint menu widgets under NetBSD's native Xorg when launched from XDM/IceWM?
3 - Has anyone resolved similar garbled glyph rendering issues with older Athena Widgets (Xaw) applications under NetBSD?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!
