smtp with mutt

New to the forum 🙂
And new NetBSD user.
Mutt is connecting to IMAP account, no problem.
But I just can't get the smtp working.
Getting a message about syntactical error.
Assuming that my config file is correct,
Is there anything I need to be aware of in the bsd ecosystem? I installed Mutt via pkgin.

Grateful for any advice/tip

Laptop.
Do I need to think about the hostname of the PC itself? I am trying to use an IMAP account but not gmail.

Adding some more info 🙂
Port 465 (ssl) attempts to connect, but hangs (fails).
Port 587 (tls) gets the error message described in the initial post.

Update.
Noob on the move.
Hostname on laptop needed to be properly configured.
New error message when attempting to send mail:
No authenticators available

In your mutt config file do you have this entry ?

set smtp_pass = "same as imap_pass"

Plus did you install these packages along side mutt from pkgsrc ?

openssl cyrus-saslauthd cy2-anonymous cy2-crammd5 cy2-digestmd5 cy2-gssapi cy2-ldapdb cy2-login cy2-ntlm cy2-otp cy2-plain cy2-saml cy2-scram cy2-sql metamail

I have no issues, beyond that I am not sure how much more I can help.

I will start by looking at these packages, I didn't install anything manually besides Mutt, so I think that can be the answer.

The password line I have.

The port for imap/tls is 993.
I use the following:

set folder="imaps://$imap_user@mail.*****.net:993/"
set spoolfile=+Inbox
set header_cache=~/Mail/.cache
set record=+SentMail
set postponed=+Drafts
set trash=+Trash
set smtp_url="smtp://$imap_user@mail.*****.net:587/"
set ssl_starttls=yes
set certificate_file =~/.config/mutt/certificates/cert.pem

Typically, you can find the ports and mail server name published. It's not easy with some, ie mine, but a web search will bring it up.
You also have to match the capitalization of the spool file and record file. This was not published but I pulled it from the provider's web mail page source.

If your ISP certificate is not in mozilla-certs, the certificate file just tells it where to look. If you websearch there is a way to extract the certificate from the mail server. I can't remember if mutt will offer to save a missing certificate. I know claws-mail does and I kept the same certificate when I migrated to mutt.
