Openbsd only has Download folder

Hello guys. I have a problem. I am using iridium on openbsd but somehow unveil or pledge i am not exactly sure only offers a Download folder if i want to Download an image for example. This Download file though has nothing to do with the folder from the xdg dirs. I cannot acces to them. Also this file cannot be accessed unless i am root which btw i cannot via gui. For the latter i know it's a permission thing but it is annoying. In the past when i was using firefox i could fix this issue. But now i can't. What shall i do ?
To make things simpler: I just want to download a file (image, text, etc) and be able to access via file manager (qt fm in my case but other suggestions are wellcome).

rhtoras you probably need to edit Iridium's unveil configuration file to grant it permission to see and write to your actual home download directory.

Don't quite get what the issue is. pcmanfm-qt (and, indeed, the lxqt package as a whole) looks quite broken. But, if I try thunar from the xfce package I have no issues accessing ~/Downloads -- which is the default location for all browsers to download things in on OpenBSD.

You can copy the URL of the image and use ftp, curl, or wget to download it from the commandline. I'd be more concerned about not being able to access the file as a normal user though - you aren't running your web browser as root, are you?

t-3 i am not running my browser as root... it is the stock openbsd installation

Jay i searched for this but unfortuantely i could not find any clues on how to do this... i am confused and this is why i asked here... if you have any suggestions i would likely try and see if they work...

in the past i could make this work on firefox but iridium: omg!

rhtoras for Firefox previous versions users needed to do this

deleted the existing `~/Downloads` directory.
manually created a new `~/Downloads` directory.
restarted Firefox.

Can't say the same for your scenario but worth a try.

rvp i use windowmaker but this thing is not wm/de specific i think. I have xdg dirs set correctly.
Let's say i have to download an image. When i download instead of having all directories on the left of my file manager i have only a file called downloads. When i go to my file manager inside the Downloads folder nothing exists. This is the issue and i am pretty sure it is an openbsd thing with unveil. In the past on icewm i did with Firefox what others suggest and everything worked fine. Nowdays in a different installation and another wm along a chromium browser nothing seems to work. Any ideas ?

rhtoras can you try this :

$mkdir -p $HOME/Downloads

$chown $(whoami) $HOME/Downloads

Then restart iridium and check if it works !

As far as I'm aware, due to pledge() and unveil(), iridium (and firefox) can only store files in /tmp and ~/Downloads (See /etc/iridium/unveil.main)

Read /usr/local/share/doc/pkg-readmes/iridium to know how to turn off unveil()--basically,

iridium --disable-unveil

This what you want?

EDIT: There're 2 separate functionalities here.

There's the File Manager (like Thunar) facility, which you get when you click the download icon in the toolbar (or use Ctrl-J). You get this if,
a) you have a file manager installed; and,
b) you have a ~/.config/mimeapps.list containing something like:

[Default Applications]
inode/directory=thunar.desktop
image/*=feh.desktop

There's the FIle Chooser feature (Ctrl-O), which I think, is what you want. For this:

$ su -l
# pkg_add xdg-desktop-portal-gtk
# echo 'pkg_scripts=messagebus' >> /etc/rc.conf.local
# rcctl start messagebus
# exit
$ cat ~/.xinitrc

Note that you'll still be restricted to the dirs. in /etc/iridium/unveil.main
Make sure both the system and user-session dbus instances are running. Read:

/usr/local/share/doc/pkg-readmes/dbus

rvp unfortunatelly nothing worked or i was doing something wrong now i have a full file with .xsession errors

what i want is simple:
Download an image
go to the folder where i downloaded the image
copy the image and paste where i want

i know openbsd is not linux but this is just an easy task to do
nevermind i will remove the xdg portal thing because it had so many dependencies some of them made me angry (they contained the word gnome)
i'll see what i can do
maybe i will find a proper guide to reinstall my system
btw desktop enviroments on openbsd followinf the man pages give me .xsession errors (all except lumina) but that's another story for another time

OK, but, this was always possible, right? You can always download to ~/Downloads in the browser (firefox or iridium--restricted by unveil() to that directory), and then pick it up from there in any other program (because they're (usually) not built with unveil() restrictions).

Make sure both dbus instances (system and user-session) are running. Otherwise, you won't be able to "see" any other directories apart from ~/Downloads (read: /usr/local/share/doc/pkg-readmes/dbus).

Didn't iridium --disable-unveil work either?
