pkgsrc update requests

The idea of starting this thread crossed my mind a while ago.

This thread is meant to gather update requests for packages found in the pkgsrc collection. In a broader perspective, it could help understand which packages users care most about, and raise attention towards those which have been silently ignored for too long.

Please notice that:

This is not an official channel.
It may not be feasible or too complicated to update a certain package at a given time (other packages depend on that version, build system changed, backward incompatibility, patch burden, upcoming pkgsrc freeze).
Many package maintainers do not participate in this forum.

I recommend Enlightenment Desktop (BSD licensed desktop) to be tested from WIP and updated 🙂

Generally the only thing I ever care to update is Firefox. Everything else I can use forever on whatever version works. I only need Firefox updated because every so often certain websites I need to access quit working in "old" versions.

I more look forward to working versions of things that aren't in pkgsrc yet than updates. But I understand; most of these things are just too much work. And I have no right to complain as I can't contribute.

Yes, I can relate. Unfortunately, this happens more and more often as time goes by.
Firefox for one depends on python, gtk3 (and possibly gtk4 in the future, together to a long list of libraries), ffmpeg, and requires rust and LLVM to build. So keeping it up to date also recursively implies maintaining the infrastructure it depends on.

I more look forward to working versions of things that aren't in pkgsrc yet than updates.

Any example worth sharing?

What about getting commit access? A nice activity to add to an already nonexisent free time :-P.

I'll give it a shot. Possibly something coming to light in 2025Q3, as I see the package is quite complex and there are many "hacks" I need to understand first.

JuvenalUrbino well, to be honest, Kodi would be pretty significant. There are linuces that can't even run it out-of-the-box anymore. Frankly I think its so important, I actually started thinking about how I could write a simpler replacement, despite the fact that unless things on the employment front go disastrously bad, there's just no way I could do anything like that for at least another year.
Considering that Kodi once was in pkgsrc, and the fact that some linuces can't even run it anymore tell me that getting it to work now is insurmountable.

I had seriously considered asking for commit access at one point. Alas, having been significantly unsuccessful in producing anything worth committing, and the fact that I don't even know about committing (for 40+ years I have only ever worked on software by myself for myself).

Oh and speaking of Firefox, I don't actually even like using it anymore. Ill have to try chromium and daydream about Origyn Web Browser or IBrowse.
