Setting up my minimalist desktop I suddenly remembered this from what, 25 years ago?

in .xinitrc

xset s blank
xset s 240
xset -dpms
beforelight &
exec twm

I was sitting there pretty pleased with myself then it dawned on me [pun intended] about the name Beforelight and the Afterdark screen savers - I'd never made that connection before.

Afterdark was release in 89 - reckon Beforelight preceded them?

Old X servers used to have a -logo switch which activated a wandering X logo screensaver. The period (2nd number) to xset s controlled how long the logo stayed in one place before it was moved.

But, this built-in screensaver was ripped out years ago in favour of the new XScreenSaver extension.

And, beforelight is always (After) Dark, innit?

Mac users would brag that they had After Dark because PCs couldn't. And then one day every PC had it and people purposely let them idle.

I remember when xlogo was they only thing I could get on my X server. But then I figured out how to get xeyes working. 🤣

(Hey when you have an Amiga, X is only a toy anyway).
