I'm new to NetBSD and I was wondering for what kind of use cases NetBSD was chosen. What I'm trying to do with it is what I was using Linux for, that is (80% professional use, 20% private): - Office tasks (word processing, spreadsheet, presentations, vector and raster image manipulation) - Email and web surfing - Music and video playing - Software development Hardware: amd64

- laptop, daily driver (tower PC runs Gentoo). Using it for Web surfing, taking notes, studying (zathura, Libreoffice, TeXstudio, ghostscript) reading ebooks, reading news (rss and newsgroups on nntp), mailing, chatting (irc, xmpp), listening to music, virtualization, playing retro games (emulators, oss engines - home firewall and DNS - general server (mosh, FTP, NNTP, mail, web, XMPP, Bittorrent) - media server, LAN only, (MPD, Icecast, minidlnad) - legacy hardware (i386, armv5, once sgimips) , just for fun

everything you mentioned I do on NetBSD.
I have to use Windows at work but, my NetBSD laptop is always with me and I do, as much as I'm allowed on it.
Private use, NetBSD with spectrwm and Voidlinux with awesomewm on top of musl-libC. Everything private on these systems.

Thinkpad T500 with Libreboot (that is 100% libre bios replacement, coreboot fork with blobs removed)
Netbsd runs fine here, previous versions 8.1 8.0 had problems with intel drm stack, laptop experienced random hangs Reported the bug and it has been fixed with 9.0, now it behaves like linux kernel 4.4 :-).

As for the usage is web surfing, browsing open source games, learning about unix.
Still considering to come back to Linux cuz some random windows games that run with wine keep appearing to my head.... ;-(.

Mostly low resource usage stuff (since I want to keep my Linux installs around for the time being) like editing text, telneting to BBS', surfing the web/gopherspace, ssh and generally learning about a *nix that isn't Linux. I'm on i386 at the moment since my little amd64 machine is having some issues.
