pkgin not working on NetBSD 9.0

Though correctly configured, pkgin does not work on NetBSD 9.0, it complains it cannot find the pkg_summary.gz file (which exists on the CDN).

Pkgsrc works fine, so this is not a blocking issue, but I wondered whether there was a configuration trick to get pkgin to work, or if a bug had already been filed and a fix was expected.

Depending where you are, one might be faster than the other. Right now you have two choices Japan or USA.

I had the same issue: using cdn.NetBSD.org, pkgin was not able to download pkg_summary.gz, despite this file appeared in the directory contents. I switched to ftp.NetBSD.org and it works.

@20-100 Someone brought this up on a mailing list too (I forgot which one). They upload the packages as they're created during the bulk build because the bulk builds can take a long time and this gives users at least some packages. IMHO I think it just creates more confusion and a worse overall experience for users. I believe the that the pkg_summary is also created at the very end of the bulk build process anyway.

Might be working for amd64 but for i386 it's still broken. The directory "9.0" is missing entirely and "9.0_2019Q4" is missing pkg_summary.gz.

Madgemade "broken" is a bit exaggerated, its present in the main server for the Q4-branch. Although, the build stamp is 07-Mar-2020 06:15 so, maybe you need to wait for the mirrors to sync.
That said, the European mirror I'm using is already up-to-date.

I suggest you follow the bulk build mailing list, then you're always aware of what's cooking 😉

EDIT: btw, 9.0 is a symlink to 9.0_2019Q4

When I was looking earlier today (prior to the date on the file) it definitely wasn't present and pkgin was complaining that it couldn't be found.
I'm not sure about a symlink? If I change configs to point at pub/pkgsrc/packages/NetBSD/i386/9.0/All/ then it's a 404 (e.g. http://ftp.ee.netbsd.org/pub/pkgsrc/packages/NetBSD/i386/9.0/All/pkg_summary.gz gives 404). For amd64 this works as expected. I agree that there should be a symlink, the installer expects 9.0 and fails unless this is manually edited to 9.0_2019Q4. Maybe this link is still to be generated and will appear tomorrow? This seems an unnecessarily disruptive way to roll out package updates.
Edit: It seems that the package update process is still underway. Currently i386 only has less than half the packages in amd64 (e.g firefox is not there yet).

😁 If you pick a STABLE image from the daily builds the installer will expect to find 9.0_STABLE but, that does not exist 😉

I don't know how you get to survive with it but I find the NetBSD package system to be a real mess 😕

If I use the default package set (9.0) many packages which are in pkgsrc are not available, and these are not obscure packages but things like the xfce4 metapackage, firefox and so on...
If I use the 9.0_current set, as of now I get problems of packages that cannot get installed because of missing dependencies.
A few days ago 9.0_current was working better so I was able to install everything I tried to. However if I had set up pkgsrc (current) as well (at install time), many packages would just refuse to install, with pkgin telling me the package size was not matching the one from the database (which was seemingly the one from pkgsrc). I had not to install pkgsrc to solve the problem, but this means I could not build from source...

bsduck I understand your frustration but, since apparently you have decided to go with FreeBSD (your other post), you don't need to worry about it.
And btw, xfce and firefox (both esr and 73) are available using pkgin.
Moreover, if you want to stay away from such issues, you should pick the Q-releases and not current.

I definitely can't find firefox (except the old version 52) nor xfce4 in the repository: http://ftp.ee.netbsd.org/pub/pkgsrc/packages/NetBSD/amd64/9.0/All/
They are in 9.0_current but not in the stable package set.

bsduck Ok! This is strange... something went wrong with the latest build but it got uploaded to the server anyway. I haven't really noticed it since the packages that are missing were already installed on my system.
In case you'd be interested, which obviously you no longer are, there's a follow-up build that should hit the mirrors in a few days.

I got that size does not match thing on the ee mirror too when I dl'd sudo which got me worried so I switched to the main ftp and had no problems there. Odd 🤔
