awesome is...
...a highly configurable, next generation framework window manager for X.
You can do anything you want with awesome, its not just a window manager 😉
It can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be.
I'm an awesome user myself, so my opinion could be biased. But, check the screenshot thead and judge by yourself. Some of those are just not achievable
in i3.
I've never used i3 but, I also use spectrwm. Although, with awesome keybinding so, I don't have to think too much when I'm using any of my laptops 😉
Pick whatever suits you but, if your question is about custumization than, awesome is the better answer.
