How to redirect audio to another device through wifi?

How do I redirect all audio from my laptop to another device on the same network?

I have a raspberry pi connected to speakers that I use as a music player through ssh, though I was wondering if it is possible to also stream audio to the raspberry pi from e.g. browsing youtube videos on firefox.

I'd figure that I have to use pad but not sure how to go about it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

oui Run a server like Jack or PulseAudio on the rpi. Compile firefox with Jack/pulseaudio support. Do the same for mpv, ffmpeg, SDL(?). Pkgsrc is already setup for this and it's just a matter of adding Jack output where needed.

This seems to work OK (client and server on same machine):

Start server on remote machine (ie. the one with the speaker)

nc -n -l 9000 | audioplay -f -c 2 -P 16 -s 44100 -e slinear_le -

Grab audio from pad(4) device on local machine and send to server (here, on localhost)

ffmpeg -f s16le -ar 44100 -ac 2 -i /dev/pad2 -f wav - | nc -N localhost 9000

Play stuff to pad-linked playback-device on local machine

env AUDIODEV=/dev/audio2 mpv /mnt/snd/Korean/playlist.m3u

I'm using the pad2/audio2 pair because my machine already has 2 audio devices: std. stereo and HDMI (audio0 and audio1).

I'll let you figure out how to make Firefox use /dev/audio2

EDIT:
Update to the latest -HEAD kernel which has pad-related fixes.
You can still twiddle your thumbs while pkgsrc makes apple-pie from scratch by recompiling the uniiverse¹

oui A less kludgey method than outlined above is to run an Icecast server on the local machine, making either that or IceS read the pad device, and then, just running mpv on the RPi as the client. (A write-up once you get this working would be very useful.)

I haven't used it, but there is audio/nas. "Like the X Window System, it uses the client/server model to separate applications from the specific drivers that control audio input and output devices."

oui This would've been easier in Plan9, eh? One system exports its audio devices and another just mounts and uses 'em locally.

The first attempt before posting here was literally to just mount /dev via sshfs... Well that didn't go very well haha!

Thanks again for providing yet an another alternative, for now sending /dev/pad2 using nc works like a charm!

Will probably try IceS and jack sometime later to compare the performance.
